ABOUT THIS PROJECT     BUILDING IT    BURNING MAN 2010     PHOTOS     CONTACT US   LINKS

These people were very helpful during the making of this project, and still get called by us regularly. We do buy stuff from them occasionally too...heh
The drive motor and wheel assembly
Built from an "E-tug" transaxle. A powerful electrically driven industrial pallet mover made by Canandian Electric Vehicles, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. If you need any bits, advice and general support regarding electric vehicle propulsion talk to the owner Randy. Very knowledgeable and helpful guy. Tell him we sent ya!
The steering mechanism
We bought our steering actuator from Mike at Motion Science Inc  who was very helpful and didn't blink when we explained what we were trying to do...
General electrical stuff
Don't even think about asking anyone who works in any Radio Shack store a technical question, they are totally clueless, but at least they are always local and have that big multi-drawer of parts at the back. We bought a bunch of small bits there. For real pro stuff such as high quality cable, electric vehicle amp and volt meters etc go to Steve at Cloud Electric Vehicles. He is the most friendly patient guy we spoke to and will give you the time to talk through what the hell you trying to do. He is great. For deep cycle 12v marine batteries call Tom at Bayland Batteries in San Jose, CA (408) 294 5611. You won't get a cheaper quality deal anywhere. Tell him you were recommended by us...we learned a huge amount about battery care from him. Top feller! He's the boss there so you might have to keep calling back until you get him personally. It's worth hangin' on to talk to him...We sourced 800 feet of red EL neon wire from Benjamin at www.coolneon.com in Oakland. He knows alot about the whole neon light thing.
Welding the damn steel together
The UC Davis Craft Center. Thanks guys! Although many of the welds are not technically beautiful, you can't really see them and they are strong enough! Marshall is the welder in this partnership...he ROCKS with a torch
Parts for the Airstream shell restoration
Andy at Inland RV in Los Angeles is the most knowledgeable Airstream guy out there. Period. Be warned he is very opinionated, a little odd, and can be downright rude to you if he thinks you're full of shit, but we really like him. He has never been wrong with any info about building, maintaining or restoring vintage Airstreams. If you need a weird ass window opener for a 1947 trailer, he's your guy...
Thanks to friends and family
Wilks' wife, Naomi and Marshall's wife Kiki put up with us not being around much for a few months recently. Well we were around occaisionally for food but were usually covered in yard dirt and aluminum oxide, and only talked in code. We love you girls! :) Actually, Naomi did much more than put up with us while we built the transport...She was Wilks' right hand help during the trailer frame off restoration. Couldn't have done it without her. Much help also from Wilks' son Billy, his brother Mat, their dad Russ who did some killer soldering. And a yo to buddies who hung and went beyond the beer-drinking comments - John Vitale, Griffin De Luce, Deszo Molnar, Sebas DeWitt and of course the Master and Mistress of social discourse Steve and Izzy Hermosillo
And of course Burning Man itself
You can do a google search for "Burning Man" and you'll come up with all sorts of mad stuff. But go to the source for the straight up info. We gotta add you have to go out to the desert yourself to understand it really. It's a bit like sex, watching it on video ain't the same. Critical tits, blah blah blah, it's not about that...
Lastly, a BIG SHOUT GOES OUT to Rob M and Bex from BM HQ in San Francisco - super thanks for all your awesome help this year....we love you!
And LAST but not LEAST we gotta link back to our own photography website and of course it's BLOG too!
